A1 – Cascade Mountain. There will be three options for this hike.
· Option A: Ridge (1st peak) above the amplitheatre – approx 1065m EG + 17.3km (6 hours)
· Option B: 2nd peak – approx. 1400m + 20km (7- 8 hours)
· Option C: Cascade summit (3rd peak) – approx 1800m + 22km (9 -10 hours)
Start time will be at 8:30am at the Mount Norquay parking lot.
The focus of this trip will be option A which is the first peak. Anyone who wants to choose and proceed with options B and C should be aware of the risks of proceeding and should proceed only if they are confident of their abilities. Some of those risks include but are not limited to possible exposure since the summit is rated as a scramble and there are some sketchy sections that may require some scrambling, falling rocks from people above since there are some very steep sections and people will be sending down rocks during their ascent, and wildlife (bears) since you could be hiking back in dusk due to the length of the trip since 10 hours could take you to 6:30pm.
The weather forecast is good for next Friday, sunny with clouds and a high of 18degC.
Specify which option you choose in your reply. I need to know which option so I can broadcast that information on Thursday and give everybody an idea who will be in their groups. Registration required.
B1: Mist Ridge. This trailhead will be accessed from the Mist Creek Day Use Area, 17km south of Highwood Pass. We will again meet at 915A, to hit the trail before 930A if all registrants have arrived, 930A if anyone is late. This hike does offer a loop, which will involve 23km and 1163m EG. However, we will aim for the South Summit (start of the ridge), which will take us 16km and 700m EG, then back the way we ascended. If a group of at least four wants to go further, so they may. Our hike is listed in the Skrastins database as being 5 hours – I am guessing that if the weather is good and we can enjoy a lazy lunch, we may be closer to 6 hours.
The trailhead is slightly north of the day use lot. If by any chance the lot is full, we can park on the grass by the trailhead. Everyone is encouraged to carpool where possible.
Temperatures are forecast to be very warm for Friday, cool to start because we are high, but rising to 12C in the PM. However, this will be October! Bring cold weather gear, and it’s maybe time to start carrying icers. Registration required.
B2: Yamnuska: hike the east ridge to the chimney and maybe climb through it to an overlook. Great views up and down the Bow Valley. Distance to chimney is 7.4 Km round trip with 500 m elevation gain. Meet at the parking lot at 9:30 am. Registration required
C: Okotoks. The Sheep River trail is an easy 7.7 km loop which is mostly paved. We will meet at 10 am in the Lyons Sheep River Campground parking lot. Take Highway 2 south, turn right onto Highway 2A and continue south for about 9 kms into Okotoks. Turn left onto Woodhaven Drive (which is just passed the bridge), turn an immediate left into the entrance of the Lyons Campground (99 Woodhaven Drive), follow the road and eventually turn right into the parking lot. A playground is on one side and the campground is on the other side of the parking lot. We will have lunch at the picnic tables near the campground after the hike. As it is mainly pavement we will be walking on it may be wise to wear runners rather than hiking boots. Registration required.
